Hello and welcome to this first episode of Easy SEO What is an expired domain name? A domain name is an address comprising letters or numbers and which hides an IP address that is much more complicated to remember. Domain names can be created on request and are assigned to a holder for a defined period. A bit like the lease of an apartment for the tenant. An expired domain name is a domain name that existed before and whose holder has lost possession of it for lack of renewing the lease.
All domain names are registered in “registries”. For example, the ".FR" extension is managed by a registry called AFNIC AFNIC (French Association for Internet Naming in Cooperation) Many of them offer a so-called "redemption" period. If during this phase the holder has not renewed the domain, it “expires” But this is not the end of the story for the domain… public can be "collected" with a fairly simple logic: first come, first served. Thus some companies have specialized in the recovery of domain names, this is called “dropcatching”. These companies collect domain names that have potential and resell them to the highest bidder during auctions. Why buy expired domain names?
